William H. “Bill” Toney

 

William H. “Bill” Toney, 87, of Terre Haute died at 12:01 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, in Union Hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Terre Haute to Leroy Toney and Ruby Storey. He was employed for 35 years with Eli Lilly, retiring in 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Cook Toney.

Survivors include one son, Mike Toney and wife Sandy; four daughters, Nancy Broecker and husband Fred, Sandra Kappus, Jane Ewing, and Teresa Hall and husband Danny; three brothers, Jim Toney, Jerry Toney and wife Wanda, and Chuck Toney and wife Shirley; two sisters, Betty Rosko of New York, and Beverly Lyon and husband Jerry; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jack Toney.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. He witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. He was an active member of William Penn Lodge 727 Free & Accepted Masons for more than 60 years. He also was a member of the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Krietenstein Post 104 American Legion, and the Eli Lilly Camping Club. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and enjoyed wood working and traveling.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Ave., with Robert Smith officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites conducted by the Marine Corps League. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by Lodge 727.
