Carl W. Campbell, 92,
passed this life on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, in Southwood Health
and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Nov. 5, 1916, to James
R. and Oma Cummins Campbell. He was a graduate of Paris High
School. He worked in the automotive industry for several years,
and at retirement was a maintenance mechanic for the Pillsbury
Company.
Carl was a founder of the Otter Creek Citizen’s Patrol and had
been recognized in 2006 as the oldest living former deputy
sheriff in Vigo County. He was a 50-year member of the William
Penn Masonic Lodge 727, where he served as chaplain for many
years. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite of the Wabash
Valley.
He married E. Fern Watson in August 1937, and they celebrated 56
years together, before her death in 1994.
Survivors include his two daughters, Marilyn F. Campbell of
Georgetown, Ill., and Mary Ellen Robertson of Vincennes; a
granddaughter, Rhonda Branca of Binghamton, N.Y.; a grandson,
Tony Branca of Vincennes; a brother, James L. (Barbara) Campbell
of rural Paris, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three
sisters; and an infant daughter.
Carl was a good friend and neighbor to many, and a craftsman who
enjoyed carpentry and metalworking. He especially liked to help
others with repair projects, and was the neighborhood
“fix-it-man” until he moved from his home north of the city to
Bethesda Gardens in 2006.
At his request, there will be no services or visitation.
Memorials may be made to his favorite charity, The Salvation
Army. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
